Columbia Law’s Professor Briffault Supports Prop 1

In an oped published by the Albany Times Union, Columbia Law Professor  Richard Briffault writes in support of the Citizens Unions position for the proposed redistricting commission, arguing that voters should support the amendment and not fall into opposition of ” the perfect being the enemy of the good.”

While Professor Briffault notes that Florida has recently enacted a constitutional ban against gerrymandering, the New York proposal’s unweighted and  non-prioritized commission criteria provide little help to constrain gerrymandering. The Florida challenges are now awaiting final trial before the Florida Supreme Court; the final word has yet to be said in the Sunshine State.
