From Politico NY’s Laura Nahmias:
“Electing wealthy people to public office is not the way to avoid the kind of transactional politics that comes from traditional campaign fundraising, Mayor Bill de Blasio said Friday as he faces questions over his own fundraising in connection with a federal investigation.
The U.S. Attorney’s office is investigating de Blasio’s fundraising on behalf of Senate Democrats and his 2013 campaign as part of a wide-ranging probe. On Thursday, NYCLASS, a group that has pushed for the mayor to ban horse carriages and which donated $100,000 to a nonprofit de Blasio created, received a subpoena from the U.S. Attorney and the Manhattan District Attorney’s office in connection with the probe.
“It starts to raise questions that Mayor Bloomberg didn’t have to face because he was self-funded,” WNYC’s Brian Lehrer said to de Blasio in a radio interview Friday morning.”
