Constitutional Amendment Gets A Boost

While voters will be asked to consider whether New York should convene a constitutional convention in 2017, Rick Karlin reports in the Times Union that “Protect the Adirondacks has come out in favor of a proposal from North Country GOP Sen. Betty Little that would begin the process of putting a constitutional amendment before voters to allow the sale of the now-closed state prison at Gabriels which is near Saranac Lake.

The prison site, which is replete with dorms (it was minimum security) a gymn and a chapel, was auctioned off three years ago to a pair of investors who wanted to turn it into a Orthodox Jewish summer camp. But problems arose when they realized it was in the Adirondack Forest Preserve, where developments are constitutionally prohibited short of a constitutional amendment. Protect the Adirondacks was one of the organizations that pointed this out.”
